Title: Volkswagen Test Rigging
Summary: The German giant Volkswagen has been caught rigging the results of emission tests on diesel automobiles. It created smart software to detect when automobiles were being tested for compliance with emissions limits and reduce emissions for the duration of the test, thus giving the impression that the automobiles were cleaner than they actually were. On the five models affected – Passat, Golf, Jetta, Beetle and Audi A3 four-cylinder diesels produced between 2009 and 2015 – reported emissions could be up to 40% lower in tests than in normal running. The reason for doing this appears to be that evading emissions regulations enabled Volkswagen to deliver better fuel economy, which was attractive to customers. A representative of the California Air Resources Board described Volkswagen’s behaviour as a “serious violation” of environmental regulation.
